Survivalist’s Garden: Vegetables That Grow In A Month

The main problem for most survivalists is what to eat when supplies have run out and the full harvest is still six months away. You need something to help fill this interim period. These plants should grow quickly, and have to be quite nutritious. Fortunately, there are vegetable crops that meet these requirements. They can be harvested a month after planting, grow almost in a pot on the windowsill, and the result and the taste are not bad. Moreover, they contain a sufficient amount of nutrients. It is about these crops we would like to tell you today.

Radishes

Radishes are the easiest option for beginner gardeners. It is difficult to mess with radishes – you will get a harvest in any case, on average, in 25 days after planting. Seeds are sown in a thin layer at a distance of 3 cm from each other, lightly covered with soil, watered, and left alone. After a week it will be clear what will germinate and what will not. Further, you will need only regular watering and after 3 weeks your radishes can be harvested.

Baby carrots

Baby carrots are almost the same as regular carrots, but they take less time to grow. Their seeds should be spread thinly, covered with soil, left for half an hour, covered with soil again, and only then watered. After a week, the plants should be thinned, so that each plant has 3 cm of a vaulted space around it. After 4 weeks, you can pull out one carrot to assess the size and understand whether it is time to harvest. Instead of beds, you can also use crates.

Spinach

Spinach is quite a useful vegetable crop. Although the “incredible value of spinach” is somewhat exaggerated. However, it grows quickly and the leaves can be harvested in 4 weeks. Planting in this case is simple – the seeds are lightly covered with soil, and placed in rows with an interval of 3 cm between plants and a gap of 30 cm. There is a little trick – you need to cut not only the young inner shoots but also the old “outer” leaves. The “greenery” must be renewed in this way, so that the plants grow more actively.

Kale

Kale is a cold-tolerant variety of cabbage that can grow in less-than-ideal climatic conditions. The main things here are water and compost. This plant doesn’t even need much sun. Seeds are planted at a depth of 3 cm in rows with an interval of 3 cm from each other.

Bok Choy

Bok choy is a vegetable crop, also known as “Chinese cabbage”. It is fast-growing, but a little more fastidious than kale. It is more demanding of watering than kale. However,  it is important not only not to dry it out, but also not to overwater it. You will understand this watering pattern better only with experience. It is planted in the same way as kale. Bok Choy’s “sprouts” grow upwards, not outwards.

Conclusion

30 days is quite a short time. If you increase it to 40-50 days, you can add less fast vegetable crops to this list. In addition, novice vegetable growers are unlikely to get everything so quickly and efficiently the first time. Therefore, it is better to practice growing vegetables “for a rainy day” now to at least master the basic principles and identify all possible difficulties. Stay safe!
